What is the Classroom Director role?

Classroom Directors serve as quiet observers in summer school classrooms, helping to ensure a smooth and supportive learning environment. They act as liaisons between CfUT leadership and the classroom teacher, assist with occasional tasks, accompany students on field trips, and remain available to help in case of emergency.

This is a low-intervention role. You’re present to observe, not to direct or instruct. Beyond core responsibilities, you’ll have the flexibility to pursue personal or professional projects of your choosing, as long as they can be completed within the classroom.

What kinds of personal projects can I work on?

Classroom Directors are encouraged to bring along work they’d like to focus on during downtime. Past participants have used this time for:

  • Planning units or lessons for the upcoming school year
  • Drafting classroom policies and procedures
  • Curating or organizing a classroom library
  • Reading books for personal or professional development
  • Completing assignments for graduate school

Feel free to tailor this time to your professional goals or interests as long as it doesn’t disrupt the classroom environment.

What should I avoid doing in this role?

To maintain the integrity of the summer school teacher’s leadership, Classroom Directors should not:

  • Intervene or correct students
  • Provide feedback or coaching to the teacher
  • Interrupt classroom instruction
  • Take on a visible leadership role in the classroom

This is an intentional part of CfUT’s model, allowing our teacher candidates to experience full classroom ownership, including both the challenges and successes.

What are the required dates and times?

Classroom Directors must be onsite for the full four-week program:

June 26 – July 23, 2025

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

If you’re unable to attend on a given day, you’re responsible for securing a degreed substitute to cover for you, informing the leadership team, and managing any payment arrangements.

What if I have a concern about the classroom or teacher?

Please bring any concerns directly to your CfUT summer school leadership team. They are your point of contact for support, feedback or problem-solving throughout the program.

What is the dress code?

Professional attire is required unless otherwise noted for special occasions.

Acceptable attire includes:

  • Dress pants or skirts
  • Collared or professional shirts/blouses (no sleeveless tops)
  • Closed-toe dress shoes

You’ll be serving as a role model for students and staff alike. Professional presentation is part of that commitment.

Additional Notes

  • Please wear your CfUT name tag during the first two weeks of summer school.
  • You will not be assigned to a classroom you currently teach, have taught or will teach. This ensures that the summer teacher is fully empowered and recognized as the leader in their classroom.
